A patio or walkway is concrete you use every day. It should be flat where the table goes, sloped just enough to drain, and safe underfoot in the rain. Our crew pours patios, front and side walkways, pads and steps, mostly at homes in and around Brantford and Paris.
In the 2025 season our crew poured a run of pads and walkways, including a broom-finish side path beside a brick house. Side walkways are often tight, with the house on one side and a fence on the other. When the truck cannot reach, the concrete goes in by pump or by wheelbarrow. We slope the path away from the house so rain does not run toward the basement.
A patio should fall slightly away from your back door. We set the forms to that slope before we pour, so water runs off to the lawn instead of pooling under your chairs. If your yard is too steep for a flat patio, a poured retaining wall can hold back the ground and make a level spot.
Most patio problems start under the slab. We dig out the topsoil, place crushed stone and pack it with a plate packer. Then we lay mesh or rebar, pour, and cut control joints so that if the slab cracks, it cracks in a straight line where we planned.
Broom finish is our standard for patios and walkways. The fine lines give grip when the surface is wet or icy, and it costs the least. If you want something more decorative, exposed aggregate and stamped finishes are options too. We also form and pour steps and landings, so the walkway meets the porch at a comfortable height.
Many jobs start with a cracked slab or sunken pavers. We break out and haul away the old surface, fix the base and pour fresh. Our sister excavation company can handle the tear-out, and we plan its dates and ours together so the pour follows soon after.
We pour patios and walkways 100 mm (4 inches) thick with reinforcement, on a packed granular base. Spots that will carry a hot tub or a vehicle get a thicker slab.
Walking on it is fine after a day or two. Wait about a week before setting heavy furniture, planters or a barbecue on it, and keep sharp metal legs off the fresh surface.
A sealer helps keep out water, salt and stains, and it is worth it on any surface that sees de-icer. We can seal it once the concrete has cured. Plan to reseal every few years.
